Advantages
Cold application of Bitumen Emulsions make them the most handy and efficient tool in road construction & maintenance. “COOLTRA-CE” is produced using 100% Indian raw-materials including special world-class emulsifiers and Bitumen.
The advantages of “COOLTAR-CE” are:
Can be used in damp-environment on wet aggregates.
Any Road repair work can be carried out in minimum time.
Provides better tack and workable conditions.
Compatible with all types of common Indian aggregates.
Can be used in any season except in excessively cold environment or during rainfall.
Economical as compared to bitumen with no air-pollution (No heating required).
Long storage stability in clean airtight container/Tank.
Choice of viscosity for different application.
Compatible with a range of Cationic Latex to produce Modified Bitumen Emulsion for use in latest resurfacing technologies.
Applications
Cationic Bitumen Emulsions are versatile products with their uses up-to 10% of total Bitumen used worldwide. In India they are recommended for a number of applications by Indian Road Congress (IRC) and Ministry of Shipping Road Transport & Highways (MSRT&H). The important areas of “COOLTAR-CE” application includes:
Tack Coat, Prime Coat, Seal Coat, Surface Dressing, Crack Sealing, Cold Mix Bituminous Surfacing.
When modified with a compatible rubber latex (eg: CATLAX) the Cationic Bitumen Emulsions are used in latest Pavement preservation technologies like Microsurfacing.
Method of Use
- Stir the bulk stored COOLTAR-CE before use. If stored in barrels, roll the Emulsion barrels at-least 6-7 times to provide effective mixing of ingredients.
- Draw the required quantity and immediately reseal the storage airtight for subsequent use.
- For Prime Coat, clean the surface to remove dust and unbound material, moist the surface avoiding any standing water and spray COOLTAR-CE in correct quantity. Allow to cure overnight. A Slow setting Grade provides the deepest penetration of primed surface, although depth varies with the porosity of the primed layer, ambient temperature, degree of moisture, viscosity of Bitumen Emulsion, chemical nature of aggregates and quantity of Bitumen Emulsion used per Square Meter.
- For Tack Coat clean the surface to remove dust and debris, if the surface is hungry or excessively hot, apply a fine spray of water avoiding standing water or water run-off. Spray COOLTAR-CE in correct quantity and allow to cure.
- For repair work, clean the surface to remove dust and debris, apply a tack coat with a suitable grade of COOLTAR-CE and allow to cure. Mix correct quantity of emulsion with aggregates to get uniform coating, fill in the required place, Compress as required and allow to cure.
- For Special applications / Road Constructions, use as directed by Engineer in charge.
Uses
Tack Coat Tack coat is an application of binder between layers of bituminous mixes to impart adhesion and to prevent slippage. There is considerable variation in the type of emulsion used for tack coats world wide. In India rapid setting cationic bitumen emulsions are recommended in the doses between 0.20 and 0.35 Kg. per sq. meter area. Since it is necessary for the tack coat to wet out any dust on the surface of the lower layer, COOLTAR-CE prove best for this application.
Prime Coat Prime coat is the application of low viscosity bituminous material on unbound and lime or cement stabilized base materials to provide good adhesion for a bituminous work. The prime coat should penetrate the base to a considerable depth. A slow setting cationic bitumen emulsion is recommended in the doses between 0.60 and 1.50 Kg. per sq. meter area. A moist surface provides better penetration for COOLTAR-CE.
Surface Dressing (Chip Seal) In this process, bituminous binder is sprayed onto the road and then stone chippings are spread over and rolled before the binder has cured. It is used on all classes of roadway as temporary or permanent sealing on unbound bases. Bitumen emulsions are particularly suited to this application as they provide better results even when stone chippings are moist. Best results can be achieved with hot-sprayed (50-85°C) rapid-setting cationic emulsions of high binder contents (RS-2).
Slurry Surfacing In this application, carefully graded aggregates are mixed with specific type of emulsion and water to form a slurry that is applied on the road surface in per-defined thicknesses.
Penetration Macadam When a rapid or medium setting cationic bitumen emulsion is applied on a compacted open-graded mix layer, It penetrates inside and provides better binding of the aggregates.
Fog Seal A light application of diluted bitumen emulsion that restores bitumen to old and weathered surfaces and extends road life at low cost.
Cold In-place Recycling An alternate to normal hot recycling where the surface course or the full depth of the roadway is recycled in place either by a specially built mobile plant or by simple equipment using bitumen emulsion (normally a slow setting grade).
Soil Stabilization Cationic slow-setting emulsion can be used to stabilize uncrushed gravels and sandy soils. Generally soils with the sand equivalence value of more than 25 can be treated for use as a base material for hot overlay or for low volume roads.
Cement Curing An application of bitumen emulsion retards the evaporation of water from the surface of cement concrete layers or bases thus ensure their maximum strength is developed.
| Types & Grades
| Rapid Setting (RS-1) | Provides rapid deposition - mainly used for Tack Coat. | | Rapid Setting (RS-2) | Provides rapid deposition - mainly used for Tack Coat and Surface Dressing. | | Medium Setting (MS) | A versatile grade, Provides Comparatively slower deposition, used for Repair work/surface dressing, Plant or road mixes with coarse aggregates and Penetration macadam. | | Slow Setting-1 (SS-1) | Consumes long time to form bituminous film with best penetration on a porous medium, used for Prime coat, Crack sealing and Fog Seal. | | Slow Setting-2 (SS-2) | Low in solvents, provides slow deposition of bituminous film, used for plant or road mixes like MSS, SDBC, Slurry Seal and for Prime coat applications. |
As per Indian Standard (IS-8887:2004), five grades of Cationic Bitumen Emulsions are available:
The International Standard (ASTM D 2397-05) materials in four grades with sub-grades are available (which differ prominently in their chemical and setting profiles) as:
Rapid Setting Sub-grade : CRS-1 & CRS-2
Medium Setting Sub-grade : CMS-2 & CMS-2h
Slow Setting Sub-grade : CSS-1 & CSS-1h
Quick Setting Sub-grade : CQS-1H
